The Economics Association of Malawi (ECAMA), represented by Executive Director Dr. Esmie Kanyumbu and Economist Primrose Chikafutwa, witnessed the inaugural professorial lecture of Professor Kennedy Machira at Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
The lecture, themed “Demographic Change and its effect towards Economic Development: A Realisation Pathway for a Sustained Human Welfare in Malawi,” explored a critical question for Malawi’s development: how the country can transform its young and growing population into a demographic dividend through investments in education, skills, health, innovation, productive employment and entrepreneurship.
The occasion also highlighted the importance of research translating into policy and practice, with strong calls for collaboration among universities, government, the private sector and development partners to turn knowledge and innovation into enterprises, jobs and improved livelihoods.
ECAMA congratulates Professor Kennedy Machira on this significant academic achievement and recognises the important contribution of research and academia to addressing Malawi’s development challenges.
